Are you taking English classes for kids or adults? Well, you can make it much easier now with some tips that can change the course of direction in teaching English classes.
With the pandemic in hand, teachers & experts have had a more evolving aspect on how to get started online while ensuring the students are able to grasp ideas, concepts, while being able to learn and put it to use.
Before you move ahead with the mainstream tips, let's understand the most basic requirements that have to be right. That is the platform and the tools that you use for collaborating with the students to make it a normal learning experience.
Some teachers choose Google Classroom, Zoho Classes, Zoom, Google Meet, and so on, which is a free environment to get started with learning online. This facilitates learning, collaboration, file sharing, correction & grading easier. Before you get started with the classes, ensure that you are able to handle such platforms efficiently by yourself without any external help.
Get to know your students on a human-level, and how you can relate things to learning based on their interests. Try to understand the level of understanding your students have as per their grade and grasping capability. Also before getting started, have an idea about why your students are learning English, and what are their interests or hobbies?
If you can do this one-on-one for each student, it would be more beneficial for you to be on the right track. Once you know this, you can easily find what motivates them and then you can know the aim of a lesson. For example, you can get started by 'Introduction about oneself & their family' if they are going for a visa interview, and similar other goals.
There can be times when students don't like to do a particular activity, for example reading a text, in such instances. You can teach them vocabulary about something they like to do. If they enjoy traveling, teach them vocabulary about travel. This will also be absolute fun, if you can role-play checking into a hotel or ordering at a restaurant.
Make your classes & lessons interactive using the art of storytelling. Make it fun using storylines and props which will help the students remember things more easily. Keep props handy to help them connect the words or certain rules with an object, like a coffee mug, notebook, etc. This definitely helps them increase their attention span and also increases the engagement in the online class.
Don't forget that your body language and tone of the voice has a very major role in making a class interesting or boring. A monotonous voice reading straight from the textbook is the biggest turn off for any student wanting to build good communication and English skills. Keep classes exciting by using different intonations in your voice. Show enthusiasm or try expressing through facial expressions to make it more understandable and relatable.
If you are applying this to teach adults, initially, it may seem childish but! you don't have to go extreme or overdo anything. Show your way of teaching & expressing gestures that will help them in the long run.
Build more group-activity related work & have a reward system where necessary. This would make it more motivating and fun. Before you plan out such instances, always ensure to study the students based on their age, interests, and appreciate them accordingly.
Don't make English-learning a serious job. Try to bring in some fun and happiness. Learning language should always be fun and bring in more energy while students practise to talk, making it easier for them to grasp the language. Make it a norm to make mistakes and learn through this process. Make questioning a general practice and you will see your students waiting to join your classes!
It has been quite a challenge considering the ongoing global situations, and courses with face-to-face situations may not be the norm anymore. It is time to make the transition and promote remote education. You can easily adapt to this part of educating individuals while redefining activities, objectives and results. Follow the seven top tips, and you should be able to handle and capture the attention of your students and encourage participation towards learning. Happy teaching!
